Green Awareness & Action

Green Initiatives

LSI is working to establish industry recognition of our products and services as both environmentally efficient and economically beneficial to our customers. Our global commitment to protect the environment focuses on our two key green initiatives: to establish our credibility as an environmentally friendly organization; and to deliver environmentally friendly, highly efficient products/services that both have a positive green impact and offer economic benefits to our customers.

Green Goals

Our broad ecosystem offers unique opportunities to drive green benefits across suppliers and customers. And our collaboration with industry associations, government agencies, suppliers, and customers will spur improved products and solutions with measurable benefits to both environment and bottom line. Our goal is to enable our customers to get more done using less power and resources. We design high-efficiency power supplies into our products and are always exploring hardware and software that enable better storage utilization. Underscoring our commitment to optimize environmental efficiency and safety, LSI is certified to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards.

From silicon, to systems, to software and solutions, we deliver a positive environmental impact on many decisions in the design and manufacturing process. For example, LSI has reduced power consumption by 25 percent on preamplifier IC for power-sensitive laptop HDDs. LSI has joined the EPA’s Climate Leaders Partnership along with other industry leaders, including IBM, Cisco and Dell.

Green Strategy

LSI is focusing on two key green initiatives driven by thought leadership. The first initiative defines how the company conducts business in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The second initiative entails how LSI delivers environmentally friendly and highly efficient products and services that have a positive green impact and offer economic benefits to our customers. The initiatives are based on four interlocking principles:

• Collaborate with industry associations, government agencies, suppliers and customers
• Identify the significant environmental issues associated with our products and operations
• Deliver solutions that reduce environmental impacts
• Measure success using economic and environmental indicators

These principles interlock because the solutions delivered are shared back with industry associations, our suppliers and customers. LSI products comply with the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive in electrical and electronic equipment. Further, our green ICs do not contain other hazardous substances such as bromine, chlorine and antimony compounds. We also offer completely lead-free flip chips (currently RoHS exempt). We expect outsourced manufacturers to comply with environmental standards. All IC suppliers working with LSI must participate in the EH&S supplier management process and either meet our standards or provide a plan to address them in a reasonable timeframe.

Green Workplace

LSI President and CEO Abhi Talwalkar has committed to reducing LSI’s own greenhouse gas emissions. By extending its existing corporate environmental initiatives, the company has a target to reduce the its Green House Gas emissions (GHG) by 15 percent from 2007 levels by the year 2012. The commitment is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders Partnership Agreement.

We further reflect environmental commitment across our own operations with practices and programs that minimize our energy usage. These include:

• Retrofitting lights in key areas with energy-saving motion sensors
• Converting to energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs
• Using cooled air captured during winter to offset summer energy requirements
• Automating improvements to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to reduce electrical and natural gas use
